What are peptides and which should I look for in a product?

Peptides, composed of amino acids, occur naturally in the body. Peptides function as messengers in the skin, allowing skin cells in the epidermis and dermis to communicate more efficiently. As we age, communication diminishes within the skin, resulting in decreased collagen production and an accumulation of degraded elastin fibers among other signs of aging. Research and clinical studies show peptides applied topically are very effective in promoting cells to behave in certain ways such as producing more collagen and reducing the signs of skin aging.

Peptides are an excellent choice to help reduce the signs of aging without using harmful chemicals or surgical procedures. There are many different peptides and they each influence skin cells in a variety of ways such as:
• Relax wrinkles
• Increase production of structural proteins and collagen
• Improve microcirculation and cell reproduction
• Reduce inflammation around the eyes
• Lead to younger looking, firmer, healthier skin

Peptides are included in Sanitas PetiDerm Anti-aging Serum, PeptiDerm Moisturizing Cream and PeptiDerm Eye Treatment. Some of the peptides you will find in Sanítas formulations include:

Acetyl Glutamyl Heptapeptide-1 is a muscle relaxing peptide that helps reduce wrinkle size and depth.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 reduces muscle contractions and softens and improves their appearance.

Dipeptide-2 helps improve lymphatic circulation and detoxification of skin, improves drainage under eyes and reduces eye inflammation and puffiness.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-5 provides anti-wrinkle and anti-aging properties and improves moisturization and firmness of skin tissue.

Palmitoyl Oligopeptide stimulates collagen, elastin and glucosaminoglycans production making skin softer and more supple.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 is a smoothing and regenerating peptide that significantly increases skin elasticity, firmness and tone.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3 suppresses inflammation and irritation, firms area around the eye and reduces eye area puffiness.

Pentapeptide-3 provides anti-aging properties, improves the skin, helps prevent wrinkles.

Acetyl Octapeptide-3 reduces the depth of wrinkles caused by the contraction of muscles, especially in the forehead and around the eyes.

What is the difference between sunscreen and sunblock?

Sunscreens are chemicals that chemically absorb UV rays. Sunscreens often contain toxic ingredients. These ingredients are fat soluble and may be absorbed through the skin’s protective barrier and exacerbate their toxicity. UVA is known as the aging ray, UVB the burning ray and UVC is the cancer causing ray. Most sunscreens only screen UVB rays, although some will screen UVA as well. Sun blocks are a complete UV block, composed of small particles of zinc or titanium that act to diffuse all three of the UV rays. Sanítas Solar Block contains Zinc Oxide and Melanin to biogenically protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays. In addition, Solar Block is formulated with antioxidant vitamins and plankton enzymes to heal and soothe the skin.

How often should I use a toner?

Toners are the second step in a good skin care regimen. They complete the job of a cleanser by truly exercising the skin. A toner works out the skin by using active ingredients like alpha and beta hydroxy acids to stimulate and exfoliate the skin while dropping the pH level. How often to tone the skin is not universal and dependent on skin type and condition. At Sanítas we encourage a schedule of exercising and resting the skin, so someone with thicker more resilient skin will be able to tone more often than someone with a thin or fragile skin type. The frequency of toning may increase as the skin becomes healthier.

What are the most important topical ingredients needed to create healthy skin?

The three most important topical ingredients in a skin care regimen are Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are simple, small, organic molecules found throughout nature. They function in all biological systems as components of the energy producing systems in cells. When used topically they provide a wide range of health and anti-aging benefits. Upon application, they can smooth, soften and improve the appearance of aged skin. With regular long-term use they have been shown in numerous clinical studies to improve almost every single marker of skin aging including photodamaged skin, skin tone and color, collagen synthesis, moisture factor content and epidermal thickness. Finally, AHAs can prepare the skin for increased penetration of active materials such as vitamins and peptides. The numerous benefits provided by AHAs in combination with their non-toxic, non-allergenic nature makes them ideal and important components of a skin care regimen

Vitamin C is the skin’s most important water-soluble vitamin. It protects skin from free radicals, environmental stresses, sun damage and the causes of aging. It is also associated with production of skin lipids. Its immune stimulating properties are well documented, and it helps improve dermal blood supply and may help improve skin pigmentation. It promotes the healing of tissues damaged by injuries or burns and it contains anti-inflammatory properties. It is available in several forms varying in stability and effectiveness.

Vitamin A is the skin’s most important fat-soluble nutrient. It is referred to as a keratinization regulator, helping to improve the skin’s texture, firmness and smoothness. Clinical studies with Vitamin A indicated a significant change in skin composition and increased collagen and elastin production. Vitamin A is believed to be essential for the generation and function of skin cells. Vitamin A, once in the skin, can convert into Retinoic Acid, providing anti aging benefits. This means that Vitamin A can stimulate cell growth for healing and anti-aging effects or slow down cell growth to improve skin conditions like acne or psoriasis.

Are Sanítas products chirally correct?

Chirality refers to the “mirror-image” form of a molecule or technically how a molecule responds to polarized light. Molecules are said to exist in two main forms, either chiral right (as in a right-hand) or chiral left (as in a left-hand). Just as left and right hands are the same yet different, (they are mirror images), so can molecules be the same but different. The human body responds to molecules that are in the correct chiral form (either right-handed or left-handed). Active materials must be in the correct chiral form for them to be effective. All Sanítas active materials are in the correct chiral form.

Is a Sanítas chemical peel for me and why?

If your skin has been damaged by the sun or acne, or if you would like to reduce the appearance of fine lines or uneven pigmentation, you may benefit from a Sanítas Peel. Sanítas Peels are a safe and effective way to visibly improve the quality, texture and tone of your skin without the discomfort and recovery time often associated with chemical peels. Our light peels gently accelerate the skin cell regeneration process by replacing old, dull skin cells with softer, smoother, younger-looking skin. When combined with a Sanítas home care regimen and repeated every 2 to 4 weeks over a period of 2 to 3 months, Sanítas Peels can help improve sun damage, lighten age spots and diminish the appearance of acne scarring. Fine lines are reduced, and your skin’s overall health and appearance is dramatically improved over time with regular use.

If you have wanted to improve your skin’s condition but have avoided peels because you didn’t want to put your life on hold, a Sanítas Peel may be right for you. Schedule a consultation with your skin care specialist to learn which Sanítas treatment will be most beneficial for your skin.

Sanítas Chemical Peels include:
Alpha Peel 20%, 30% and 40%
Alpha peels are recommended for almost everyone. Whether your skin is healthy, dry or oily, a Glycolic Acid Peel can help you achieve a fresher look. Glycolic Acid works particularly well on fine lines and wrinkles. Sanítas Glycolic Peels come in three different strengths. Each strength is graduated to give the skin a more therapeutic treatment.

TCA 10% Peel
Although still therapeutic for the skin, Sanítas TCA 10% Peels are mild. If your skin is sensitive, thin, or fragile a TCA 10% Peel treatment will strengthen your skin, allowing it to be more resistant to environmental stresses. Your skin will be noticeably smoother and fresher looking.

Beta Peel 17%
The Sanítas Beta Peel 17% is a more vigorous peel than our TCA or Alpha Peels. This peel is usually recommended for blemished, thick or oily skin or skin that is hyperpigmented.

Lactic Acid Peel Mask
Lactic Acid Peel Mask is a milder peel that is good for all skin types. This peel helps decrease hyperpigmentation, improve skin tone and texture and soften fine lines.

Jessner’s Peel
A Jessner’s Peel is a combination of different peeling agents and produces the most dramatic effects. This peel is ideal for aging or sun damaged skin and hyperpigmentation but is also effective on normal or oily skin.

What do you recommend nutritionally to help acneic skin?

Acne is 100% treatable if you can identify its origin! Different types of acne manifest on the skin in different ways, some acne is oily and some is dry. It is important to consult with your skin care professional on which type you have in order to effectively treat your condition. In most cases this can be done without any type of prescription medication, although in severe cases some prescription products can speed up the process. Acne should be attacked both topically and internally.

We recommend a 4 step topical plan supported internally with supplements:

1. Cleanse with Salicylic Herbal Cleanser (active cleanser) and alternate with Lemon Cream Cleanser (resting cleanser)
2. Tone with Mild Medicated Toner
3. Moisturize with Oil Free Moisturizer and or Vitamin C Moisturizer
4. Treat accordingly with appropriate Sanítas treatments: Drying Lotion, Zapper, Retinol Resurfacing Treatment and Tea Tree Mask.

1. Sanítas Complexion Clear – nutritional support for blemished skin (Vitamin B-5, B Complex, Zinc Picolinate, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Selenium and NAC)
2. Sanítas EFA Complete – essential fatty acid supplement
